WASHINGTON — Before Saturday’s 12-6 loss got out of control for the Nationals, Ian Desmond hit a baseball so far off San Francisco Giants’ pitcher Jake Peavy at AT&T Park.
Desmond’s second-inning solo home run, his 15th of the season, gave the Nationals a 2-0 lead. The ball looked to have traveled really, really far — because it did.
According to ESPN’s Hit Tracker tool, Desmond’s home run traveled 470 feet, making it the tenth-longest long ball in Major League Baseball this season.
Desmond’s bat speed reached 115.3 miles per hour, his second-fastest on a home run this season (he swung his bat 115.7 MPH on the homer he hit at Dodger Stadium last week).
Of the six home runs Peavy has allowed this season, this was the longest, by 69 feet (Clint Robinson’s 401-footer on July 3 was the next longest).
Bryce Harper’s reaction from the dugout says it all.

A remarkable bomb, worth re-watching.
